Betulin is found on the outside of birch bark and is what makes it white and keeps the trees from dehydrating during frigid winters. Betulin is so water and wear resistant that Native American tribes, like the Algonquin and Ojibwa, made canoes out of birch bark. Extracts of birch bark were also used as medicine by not only Native Americans but the Sami of Scandinavia, to cure skin sores. In fact, science has now shown that betulin has many medicinal properties including wound healing and anti-inflammation. Lanolin is another natural emollient.
